Bezienswaardigheden / tips Fundy Trail Provincial Park 2026:

1) Fundy Trail Provincial Park: De Fundy Trail Provinciaal Park voorheen de Fundy Trail Parkway is een 30 kilometer lange schilderachtige weg (parkway) in de Atlantische provincie New Brunswick langs de kust van de Bay of Fundy. De parkway biedt toegang tot een aantal paden en meer dan 21 uitkijkpunten langs de kust, waaronder een 10 kilometer lang voetgangers en fietspad en de Big Salmon River Suspension Bridge. De parkway ligt ook langs vijf verschillende stranden en vier watervallen. Er is ook een interpretatiecentrum lang de route dat informatie geeft over de geschiedenis van het gebied. De verbindingsweg tussen Alma en de West Gate loopt door heuvelachtige, met bomen omzoomde bossen en biedt af en toe een verleidelijk uitzicht op 's werelds hoogste getijden. Het is een mooie rit op zich, maar de Fundy Trail Parkway begint officieel pas als je de poorten van de Provinciaal park Fundy Trail passeert, waarvoor een bescheiden toegangsprijs vereist is. Het is zeker de moeite waard. Verfrissend genoeg zijn er onderweg geen kiosken die te duur eten of souvenirs verkopen, waardoor de ervaring authentiek en natuurlijk blijft. Tal van picknickbanken nodigen bezoekers uit om tijd door te brengen met het waarderen van 's werelds hoogste getijden en het weidse uitzicht op kliffen, stranden en Nova Scotia aan de overkant van de baai. De poorten van de Fundy Trail zijn geopend van half mei tot half oktober. Afhankelijk van het weer (want het kan hier erg wisselvallig zijn) en wat je precies wilt gaan doen heb je aan twee tot drie dagen genoeg om het park te bekijken. Ik zal hieronder alleen de highlights benoemen waar ikzelf ben geweest. Alle andere bezienswaardigheden worden genoemd in deze link. Fundy Trail Provincial Park is geen onderdeel van Fundy National Park, je betaalt hier CAD 21,74 per voertuig (geldig tot 10 personen).

2) Walton Glen Gorge Observation Deck: De Walton Glen Gorge Observation Deck is toegankelijk via de Fundy Trail Parkway. Het onlangs geopende oostelijke deel van de Fundy Trail Parkweg ligt niet direct aan de kustlijn maar meer landinwaarts waar je direct een bezoek kunt brengen aan de Walton Glen Gorge Observation Deck, ook bekend als de Grand Canyon van New Brunswick. Volg vanaf de parkeerplaats een kort breed bospad, de wandeling is makkelijk en brengt je naar het grote uitkijkplatform.

3) Eye of the Needle Trail: Er is ook een mogelijkheid om de Eye of the Needle Trail te bewandelen. De trail start net voor de Walton Glen Gorge Observation Deck en is een hele zware wandeling. De hoogte is 187 meter en je moet heel veel klimmen. Eenmaal beneden aangekomen kom je bij Walton Glen Brook en deze volg je tot aan het Oog van de Naald en de Little Salmon Rivier. Het bovenste deel van de kloof heeft een grote waterval. De afdaling langs de kliffen naast de waterval is erg gevaarlijk, het is enorm slipperig want je moet over gladde stenen lopen. Eenmaal beneden zie je de prachtige 44 meter hoge Walton Glen Falls. Vanwege de moeilijkheidsgraad en het vele klimmen ben je zeker een volledige dag kwijt aan deze wandeling. 

4) Martin Head Lookout: Martin Head is een prachtig landschap met een uitzonderlijk uitzicht op de kustlijn van Fundy. Het is een zeer grote en lange grindbank en steekt recht uit in de Bay of Fundy en is bedekt met veel bomen. 

5) Long Beach: Long Beach heeft het meest uitgestrekte strand van de Bay of Fundy (ongeveer twee kilometer bij eb) met een zandgedeelte om te zonnebaden en een 'ontdekkingsstrand' voor kinderen om de oceaanbodem te doorzoeken op zoek naar schatten. Gratis strandspeelgoed, informatiedisplays en artefacten zijn te vinden in de parkkiosk bij de parkeerplaats. Ook zijn hier diverse picknick plaatsen en wasruimtes te vinden. 

6) Big Salmon River en Suspension Bridge: Big Salmon River is een andere populaire stop vanwege de Suspension Bridge (hangbrug), het interpretatieve centrum en de verfrissende duik in een kreek met water dat zo schoon is dat je het kunt drinken. Deze stop is erg geliefd door mensen met jonge kinderen. Behalve dat je hier kunt zwemmen in het heldere water is het ook een geliefde plek om te vissen. 

7) Davidson Lookout: Vanaf de Davidson Lookout heb je een prachtig uitzicht op Ilse Haute en de kust van Nova Scotia. Dit uitkijkpunt is vernoemd naar William Davidson, een landbegunstigde in het gebied en eigenaar van de eerste zagerij. 

8) Hearst Lookout: Hearst Lookout is het hoogste gedeelte vanaf zeeniveau. Vanaf hier heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de westelijke kustlijn bij mooi weer maar de bomen zorgen ervoor dat het zicht minder is. Sinds de officiële opening van het park in augustus 1998 zijn er veel elanden gespot in dit gebied. 

9) Fuller Falls: Fuller Falls is de meest toegankelijke waterval, met een korte maar steile houten trap naar beneden naar een bebost uitkijkplatform. Vanaf het platform loopt nog een steile houten trap naar de waterval die 15 meter hoog is. De stroom gaat verder naar beneden over nog een aantal watervallen totdat hij de kust bereikt bij Melvin Beach.

10) Klimaat: De Fundy baai is een van de mistigste gebieden ter wereld. Door het grote contrast tussen de zeetemperatuur en de overtrekkende lucht is het in St. John ca. 90 dagen per jaar mistig, in juli zelfs ongeveer tien dagen. 



Highlights / tips Fundy Trail Provincial Park 2026:

1) Fundy Trail Provincial Park: The Fundy Trail Provincial Park, formerly the Fundy Trail Parkway, is a 19 miles (30-kilometre) scenic drive (parkway) in the Atlantic province of New Brunswick along the coast of the Bay of Fundy. The parkway provides access to a number of trails and more than 21 coastal viewpoints, including a 6 miles (10-kilometre) pedestrian and bicycle path and the Big Salmon River Suspension Bridge. The parkway is also located along five different beaches and four waterfalls. There is also an interpretive center along the trail that provides information about the history of the area. The link road between Alma and the West Gate passes through hilly, tree-lined forests, occasionally offering tantalizing views of the world's highest tides. It's a beautiful drive in itself, but the Fundy Trail Parkway doesn't officially begin until you pass the gates of the Fundy Trail Provincial Park, which requires a modest entrance fee. It’s definitely worth it. Refreshingly, there are no kiosks along the way selling overpriced food or souvenirs, keeping the experience authentic and natural. Numerous picnic benches invite visitors to spend time appreciating the world's highest tides and the expansive views of cliffs, beaches and Nova Scotia across the bay. The gates of the Fundy Trail are open from mid-May to mid-October. Depending on the weather (because it can be very changeable here) and what exactly you want to do, two to three days will be enough to view the park. I will only mention the highlights below where I have been myself. All other sights are mentioned in this link. Fundy Trail Provincial Park is not part of Fundy National Park, and the fee is CAD 21.74 per vehicle (valid for up to 10 people).

2) Walton Glen Gorge Observation Deck: The Walton Glen Gorge Observation Deck is accessible via the Fundy Trail Parkway. The recently opened eastern section of the Fundy Trail Parkway is not directly on the shoreline but more inland where you can visit the Walton Glen Gorge Observation Deck, also known as the Grand Canyon of New Brunswick. From the parking lot follow a short wide forest path, the walk is easy and takes you to the large viewing platform. 

3) Eye of the Needle Trail: There is also a possibility to walk the Eye of the Needle Trail. The trail starts just before the Walton Glen Gorge Observation Deck and is a very difficult walk. The height is 613 feet (187 meters) and you have to climb a lot. Once you reach the bottom you come to Walton Glen Brook and follow this to the Eye of the Needle and the Little Salmon River. The upper part of the gorge has a large waterfall. The descent along the cliffs next to the waterfall is very dangerous, it is extremely slippery because you have to walk on slippery stones. Once down you will see the beautiful 144 feet (44 meter) high Walton Glen Falls. Due to the difficulty and the amount of climbing, this trail will certainly take you a full day.

4) Martin Head Lookout: Martin Head is a beautiful landscape with exceptional views of the Fundy coastline. It is a very large and long gravel bar and juts straight into the Bay of Fundy and is covered with many trees.

5) Long Beach: Long Beach has the longest beach in the Bay of Fundy (about 1.2 miles or two kilometers at low tide) with a sandy area for sunbathing and a "discovery beach" for children to explore the ocean floor for treasure. Free beach toys, information displays and artifacts can be found at the park kiosk near the parking lot. Several picnic areas and washrooms are also located here. 

6) Big Salmon River en Suspension Bridge: Big Salmon River is another popular stop for the Suspension Bridge, interpretive center, and refreshing dip in a creek with water so clean you can drink it. This stop is very popular with those with young children. In addition to swimming in the clear water, it is also a popular fishing spot. 

7) Davidson Lookout: The Davidson Lookout offers a magnificent view of Ilse Haute and the Nova Scotia coast. This overlook is named after William Davidson, a land grantor in the area and owner of the first sawmill. 

8) Hearst Lookout: Hearst Lookout is the highest point above sea level.From here you have a beautiful view of the western coastline in good weather, but the trees ensure that the visibility is less. Since the official opening of the park in August 1998, many moose have been spotted in this area. 

9) Fuller Falls: Fuller Falls is the most accessible waterfall, with a short but steep wooden staircase leading down to a wooded viewing platform. From the platform, another steep wooden staircase leads to the waterfall, which is 49  feet (15 metres) high. The stream continues down over several more waterfalls until it reaches the shore at Melvin Beach. 

10) Climate: The Bay of Fundy is one of the foggiest areas in the world. Due to the great contrast between the sea temperature and the passing air, St. John is foggy for about 90 days a year, even about ten days in July.

De Walton Glen Gorge ook wel de Grand Canyon van New Brunswick is een 300 meter brede, 500 miljoen jaar oude kloof met een diepte van 150 meter en een waterval "Walton Glen Gorge watervallen".

The Walton Glen Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of New Brunswick, is a 984 miles (300 metre) wide, 500-million-year-old gorge with a depth of 492 miles (150 metres) and a waterfall "Walton Glenn Gorge Falls".





De wandeling ernaar toe is makkelijk en duurt slechts 20 minuten vanaf de parkeerplaats naar het houten observatiedek, geschikt voor kinderen en ouderen (zie film).

The trail is easy and takes only 20 minutes from the parking lot to the wooden observation deck, suitable for children and the elderly (see film).





Ervaren wandelaars zullen een kijkje willen nemen in de uitdagende 2,4 kilometer lange Eye of the Needle Trail die steil afdaalt naar de bodem van de kloof (zie film).

Experienced hikers will want to check out the challenging 1.5-mile Eye of the Needle Trail that descends steeply to the canyon bottom (see film).





Martin Head Lookout is een favoriete stop langs de Fundy Trail Parkway. In het oosten zie je een stuk Fundy kustlijn en een prachtig uitzicht op Martin Head, een lang stuk grind dat verbonden is met een rotsachtige kop bij de monding van de Quiddy River.

Long Beach is een 2,5 km lange zandstrand is omzoomd met een interessante reeks rotsen. Bij eb strekt Long Beach zich uit over 500 meter in de baai, zodat je over de oceaanbodem kunt lopen.

Long Beach is a 1.5 miles (2.5 km) long sandy beach is lined with an interesting series of rocks. At low tide, Long Beach stretches 500 meters into the bay, allowing you to walk on the ocean floor. 





Het Interpretatieve Centrum heeft niet alleen een prachtig uitzicht maar is een geweldige plek om meer te leren over de geschiedenis van de nederzetting aan de Big Salmon River.

Not only does the Interpretive Center offer beautiful views, it is a great place to learn about the history of the Big Salmon River settlement.



De Big Salmon River Suspension Bridge is een hangbrug en werd gebouwd in 1974 en is 84 meter lang. De hangbrug is toegankelijk via de Suspension Bridge Trail. Dit pad begint op de Fundy Trail Parkway parkeerplaats P8 bij de Mitchell Franklin brug.

De brug overspant de Big Salmon River, een kleine rivier die uitmondt in de Bay of Fundy en waar je goed kunt zwemmen en vissen.

The bridge spans the Big Salmon River, a small river that flows into the Bay of Fundy and is great for swimming and fishing.





          Vanaf Davidson Lookout heb je een prachtig uitzicht op Ilse Haute en de kust van Nova Scotia (zie film).

Hearst Lookout is een van de hoogste uitzichtpunten vanaf zeeniveau. Vanaf dit uitkijkpunt heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de westelijke kustlijn en uitkijk op het bos.

Fuller Falls is een van de velen favoriete attracties in het park en gemakkelijk bereikbaar omdat het heel dicht bij de parkway ligt (zie film).

De Fuller Falls trail is een korte trail die afdaalt via een kabeltrap en brengt je naar een uitkijkplatform. Vanaf hier kun je verder lopen naar de 15 meter hoge Fuller waterval.

The Fuller Falls trail is a short trail that descends via a cable staircase and takes you to a viewing platform. From here you can continue to the 15-metre high Fuller Falls.
